Some people seem to want to spend their lives defying death, cheating death, delaying death. In fact, a lot of them end up not-dying rather than living.
If you live like that, what a waste of time and effort.
If you play your life against death, you will lose. He only has to score once, and score he will.
So, call him out, “Oi, you! Outside! Now! Listen, pal, you’re not the star of this show, I am. You’re just the timekeeper. So take that stupid grin off your face and go and sit over there with your silly hourglass and turn off the lights when time is up.”
Change the game. Make it about how you live your life. The only contestants are you and yourself. How you cope with life and how you measure up to your own standards, that’s all that matters.
And every night you will go to bed knowing you failed.
And every morning, get up and play again.
And play knowing you will fail, but that you will keep trying.
Because that’s all that matters. Trying.
Put death on the bench where he belongs. Your only real opponent is you.
When bad shit happens, you have a choice. Are you a victim, or a survivor?
Only you can make that call.
